Let me guess.
Your laptop stopped working and someone — a friend, a family member, maybe a colleague — told you to just forget about it and buy a desktop instead.
“Laptops are too hard to fix. Too expensive. Not worth the headache.”
We hear this almost every single day at our shop on C.R. Avenue. And every single time, we have to tell people the truth — that advice, as well meaning as it might be, is just wrong.
I’m not saying this to sell you a repair. I’m saying this because after 25 years of fixing laptops in Kolkata, we’ve seen hundreds of people spend money on a new device when their old one could have been fixed for a fraction of the cost. That’s money that didn’t need to be spent. And it bothers us every time.
So if you’re sitting there right now with a broken laptop and wondering what to do — please read this before you make any decisions.
Why Do People Think Laptops Can’t Be Repaired?
It’s a fair question honestly.
Laptops are slim. The parts are small. Everything is packed in tightly. When you look at a laptop compared to a big desktop tower, it’s natural to assume that fixing a laptop must be incredibly complicated.
And yes — laptops are more delicate than desktops. Nobody is going to pretend otherwise.
But here’s the thing. Complicated for who?
For you, the person who just needs their device to work — it doesn’t matter how complicated the repair is on the inside. That’s our job. You hand us the laptop, we figure out what’s wrong, we fix it, and you take it back home working properly. The complexity happens in our hands, not yours.
The real question is — is it fixable? And the honest answer, for most laptop problems, is yes.
We’ve fixed laptops that customers were convinced were completely dead. Devices that got soaked in water. Screens smashed beyond recognition. Motherboards that had been fried. Not every single one, but far more than people expect. And every time we hand back a repaired laptop to someone who thought it was finished, it feels good.
The Real Reason People Buy Desktops — And Why It Often Doesn’t Make Sense
Here’s something we’ve noticed over the years.
When someone’s laptop breaks and they’re frustrated, they don’t always think clearly. They just want the problem to go away. And “buy a desktop” sounds like a solution because it’s a fresh start.
But think about it practically for a moment.
You live in Kolkata. Maybe you’re a student. Maybe you work from home or go into an office. Maybe you run a small business and you’re always moving around. A desktop means you need a proper desk, a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, a UPS for the power cuts — and then it all sits in one room and never moves.
Is that really what your life looks like?
For most people in this city, the answer is no. Kolkata flats aren’t always big. Power cuts are real. Daily commutes are long. Life requires you to move around. And a laptop fits into that life in a way that a desktop simply doesn’t.
Your laptop goes with you to college in Jadavpur. It sits with you in a café near Park Street when you need a change of scene. It keeps working when the power goes out in your Dum Dum flat at 9pm and you still have a deadline. A desktop can’t do any of that.
So before you trade your laptop for a desktop just because someone scared you about repair costs — take a breath and think about whether a desktop actually makes sense for how you live and work.
What’s Actually Wrong With Your Laptop? Probably Less Than You Think
This is where we want to be really honest with you.
Most laptop problems sound worse than they are. Here are the things we fix most often at our shop — and the truth about each one:
The screen is cracked or broken
We know it looks awful. A cracked screen feels like the end. But replacing a laptop screen is one of the most common things we do. We have screens for most popular models and we replace them quickly. It’s not cheap, but it’s almost always far cheaper than buying a new laptop.
The laptop won’t turn on at all
This is the one that sends people into a panic. But a laptop that won’t start is not automatically dead. Nine times out of ten it’s a battery that’s completely given up, a charging port that’s stopped working, or a small power component on the motherboard. These are fixable problems. Bring it to us before you give up on it.
It gets really hot and shuts down suddenly
Your laptop isn’t broken — it’s just choking on dust. Over time, dust collects inside and the cooling fan can’t do its job properly. The laptop overheats and shuts itself down to protect the internal parts. A thorough cleaning and fresh thermal paste and it’ll run cool and quiet again like it used to. We do this repair every single day.
It has become incredibly slow
Slow laptops are genuinely one of the most common complaints we hear. And it’s almost never a reason to buy a new device. In most cases, either the RAM needs an upgrade or the old hard drive needs to be replaced with an SSD. An SSD upgrade in particular makes such a dramatic difference that customers often can’t believe it’s the same laptop. It boots up in seconds. Everything opens faster. It feels completely new.
The keyboard has stopped working
Some keys stopped responding, or the whole keyboard is dead. Keyboard replacement is one of the simplest repairs there is. We stock keyboards for most laptop models and it doesn’t take long at all.
The charging port is damaged
The charging port takes a lot of abuse over the years — plugging in, pulling out, sometimes at odd angles. Eventually it gives up. But this is a very quick and affordable fix in most cases.
It got wet
Okay this one is more serious. But even water damaged laptops can often be saved if you act fast. The biggest mistake people make is trying to turn it on to check if it still works. Don’t do that. Turn it off, don’t plug it in, and bring it to us immediately. The faster you get here, the better the chances of saving it.
Viruses and strange software behaviour
Pop-ups you didn’t ask for. Programs crashing randomly. Files that have disappeared. The laptop just acting weird. This is almost always a virus or a software problem. We clean it up, reinstall the system if needed, and recover data wherever we can.
Okay But What About Desktops — Are They Really Easier to Repair?
Yes. If we’re being completely honest — yes, desktops are easier for a technician to work on.
The parts are bigger. There’s more space inside. Components are more standardised, which means spare parts are easier to find and usually cheaper. A desktop repair almost always costs less than the same type of repair on a laptop.
We’re not going to pretend that’s not true.
But here’s what matters — the question isn’t which device is easier for us to repair. The question is which device is right for your life. And for most people in Kolkata today, that’s still a laptop.
Here’s a simple comparison if it helps:
| Laptop | Desktop | |
|---|---|---|
| Can you carry it? | Yes | No |
| Works in a power cut? | Yes | No |
| Fits a small flat? | Easily | Needs full setup |
| Good for students and professionals? | Perfect | Limited |
| Repair cost | Moderate | Slightly lower |
| Can be upgraded? | Some parts | Much easier |
| Worth repairing? | Almost always | Yes |
A Little Bit About Who We Are
We started Vijay Enterprises back in 2000. That’s over 25 years ago now.
When we started, laptops were still a luxury item. Most people had desktops. But we always believed laptops were the future — and we put in the work to learn them properly.
From 2005 to 2017, we were an authorised service center for HCL Technologies. That gave us formal technical training and a level of discipline in our work that we’ve never let go of. Every repair we do today reflects those standards.
Over the years our customers have come to us from all over Kolkata — from Behala and Tollygunge in the south, from Salt Lake and Dum Dum in the north, from Howrah across the river, from Barasat, from Garia, from all over. We’re centrally located on C.R. Avenue which makes us easy to reach from most parts of the city.
We repair every major brand — HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer, Apple MacBook, Samsung, MSI, Toshiba. If it’s a laptop and it has a problem, we’ve almost certainly seen it before.
What we’re most proud of though isn’t the brands we’ve worked on or the years we’ve been open. It’s the customers who keep coming back. People who first came to us with their laptop ten years ago and now bring their children’s laptops too. That kind of trust means everything to us.
Some Simple Things You Can Do to Keep Your Laptop Healthy
We’re a repair shop so technically we benefit when things break. But honestly, we’d rather you take care of your laptop properly and only see us for annual servicing.
So here’s real advice:
Get it cleaned every few months. Dust is a silent killer for laptops and most people never think about it. You don’t need to open it yourself — just bring it to us and we’ll do it properly.
Don’t use it on your bed or on a pillow. We know it’s comfortable. But those soft surfaces block the air vents underneath and the laptop quietly overheats every time you do it. Use a hard surface or a proper laptop stand.
Use a decent charger. Cheap chargers from unknown brands are genuinely dangerous for your laptop’s battery and charging circuit. Always use the original or a trusted replacement.
Don’t wait on small problems. A key that’s sticking, a screen that flickers occasionally, a battery that doesn’t last as long as it used to — these are signs. Fix them early and they’re small and cheap. Leave them and they turn into big and expensive.
Shut it down properly sometimes. Closing the lid every single time isn’t the same as shutting down. Give it a proper restart regularly.
Get a yearly checkup. Even if everything seems fine. A bit like going to the doctor — catching a small problem early is always better than dealing with a big one later.
Questions People Ask Us All the Time
Is it really worth repairing my laptop or should I just buy a new one?
This is the question we get most often. And the honest answer is — in most cases, yes, repairing is absolutely worth it. A decent new laptop costs ₹30,000 minimum, usually more. Most repairs cost a small fraction of that. Unless your laptop is very old, has been repaired multiple times already, or has several major faults all at once, fixing it will almost always save you significant money.
How much will the repair cost?
It really depends on what’s wrong. Minor things like cleaning, keyboard replacement, or a charging port fix are quite affordable. Screen replacements are mid-range. SSD and RAM upgrades are great value for what they do. Motherboard repairs can cost more but even then are usually cheaper than a new laptop. We always tell you the exact cost before we start — no surprises.
How long will it take?
Most repairs are done the same day or within 24 hours. If we need to order a specific part it’ll take a bit longer, but we’ll always give you a clear timeline so you’re not left waiting and wondering.
My laptop won’t turn on at all. Is it finished?
Probably not. This is one of the most common things we see and in most cases there’s a specific fault that can be identified and fixed. Don’t assume it’s dead until someone qualified has actually looked at it.
My laptop got wet. What do I do right now?
Turn it off immediately if it’s on. Do not plug it in. Do not try to turn it on to check if it works. Bring it to us as fast as you possibly can. Time is genuinely critical with liquid damage.
Do you give any warranty on repairs?
Yes we do. Ask us about it when you come in.
